EUROPLASMA: Delivery of the Plasma Facility for the Treatment of Low-Level Radioactive Waste Treatment in Bulgaria

BORDEAUX, France, September 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --

Europlasma Industries has successfully commissioned the plasma system as well as the melting furnace dedicated to the treatment of low-level radioactive waste (LLW), installed in the Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria. This achievement is the conclusion of years of efforts by Europlasma and its partners Iberdrola and Belgoprocess.

This first unit using non-transferred arc plasma technology for the treatment of low-level radioactive waste offers significant advantages. Firstly, plasma technology ensures homogeneous melting of every nature of waste, be it organic or inorganic. Secondly, this process drastically reduces the volume of waste, up to 80 times in certain cases, and definitely eliminates the risk of leaching once the treated material is stored. This solution therefore allows to significantly increase existing storage capacities whilst improving their safety.

Under the supervision of the Bulgarian authorities, the installation has passed a series of rigorous acceptance tests. During the performance test, lasting 72 continuous hours, waste has been injected and melted at the nominal flow rate of 65 kg/h, meeting thedesigned operating parameters. The complete waste treatment plant is expected to enter into commercial operation in 2018, upon receipt by the Bulgarian operator of the administrative authorization for the radioactive waste treatment.

Jean-Eric Petit, C.E.O. declares: "The use of this French technology for treatment of radioactive waste is a world first. The proven plasma solution enables the deployment of a new industrial cluster dedicated to radioactive waste treatment, to meet in particular the many challenges arising from the future dismantling of nuclear power plants."
